Cigarette Smoking Should Not Be Banned - 1528 Words

Should cigarette smoking be banned for everyone in the United States? Why? Why not? Should those who chose their time smoking to relieve stress, personal enjoyment, or simply just because, have to lose their right to what makes them happy? Smoking tobacco products has been around for decades and in many different forms. Should personal rights be pushed aside to please those around us that disagree with the so called â€Å"disgusting habit†? In the paper The Washington Times an article caught my interest called†D.C. seeks bans on smoking in national parks† written by Steven Dinan. In this article he stated that â€Å"Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton wrote Park Service Regional Director Steve Whitesell saying she’s heard from constituents who fear†¦show more content†¦In the article â€Å"Why ban the sale of cigarettes? The case for abolition† by Robert Procter states that â€Å"Another objection commonly raised to any call for a ban is that t his will encourage smuggling, or even organized crime.† I can agree with this statement although this author is for banning this statement brings out a huge issue that could potentially arise from banning tobacco. If there is a will there will be a way. Another outrageous idea I read in the article called â€Å"Regulatory Approaches to Ending Cigarette-Caused Death and Diseases in the United States† by Richard Daynard was the fact that the government would give tobacco companies a limit to how many cigarettes that can produce each year. By doing this it stated by the end of 2015 â€Å"it would become unlawful for a cigarette manufacturer to produce more than two-thirds of the brands baseline.†. So not only would the indoor-outdoor smoking bans be in effect the government would now be regulating the amount of cigarettes produced in the United States. Therefore I feel as strongly as others about banning smoking rights. I am a non-smoker myself and as long as you a ren’t purposefully blowing smoke in my face, feel free to do as you please.
